Mastering the Art of Safe and Effective Gel Nail Removal: Tips from the Pros

Updated: Jan 20

I think we have all picked at our peeling nail polish more than we would like to admit . Then to only realize that we have actually only damaged our nails . Even as professional nails techs some removals are not being removed properly . Some with E files and bits that are not meant for the natural nail.

Properly removing nail enhancements, such as acrylic, gel, or shellac manicures, is a crucial step to maintain the health and appearance of your natural nails. The process requires patience and care to avoid damaging the delicate nail bed underneath. Begin by gently filing the shiny top layer to remove the glossy shine, taking care not to file too aggressively and thin out the nail. Next, soak a cotton ball in acetone-based nail polish remover and place it directly on the nail, wrapping it in foil to trap the vapors. Allow this to sit for 10-15 minutes, which will further dissolve the enhancement. Carefully peel off the cotton ball and use an orangewood stick or gently file to push and lift the remaining enhancement off the nail. Avoid yanking or peeling it off forcefully, as this can tear the nail and cause painful damage. Once the enhancement is fully removed, thoroughly clean the nails with soap and water, then apply a nourishing cuticle oil or hand cream to rehydrate the nail bed. With proper, gentle removal, your natural nails will be left clean, healthy, and ready for your next nail appointment.
